Jason Parrott’s performance at last weekend’s World Kart Championship was encouraging, with his speed putting in podium positions until he suffered an engine failure at La Conca in the far south of Italy. The World Championship is a one-weekend event, which drivers qualify for based on previous performance, adding up to a tremendous atmosphere.

Despite concerns about a lack of power, hard work fro both Jason and his team, MGM Racing, had him qualifying 18th, about a third of the way down the ranking and a position that he could build on in the heats, which would determine the grid positions for the Prefinal.

With eighth, fifth and fourth in his three heats, Jason successfully avoided all the usual first corner crashes to earn a ninth place starting position on the grid. He was now very confident of the kart setup and that he could overcome many more of the opposing drivers.

Running at his qualifying pace during the Prefinal to take the fastest lap, Jason came home sixth after a highly competitive race where he dispatched several other title contenders. He was pumped when he came back to the pits, telling the team, “I can do this.”

So at the start of the decisive Final, Jason was part of a breakaway at the front of the field and as the drivers in front of him jockeyed for position he looked for gaps he could take advantage of.

After two laps, the favourite Arnaud Kozlinski’s engine gave way, promoting everyone up a place. Then the third-placed driver Davide Fore attacked the leaders, but this just gave Jason the opportunity to move into a gap at the hairpin. Fore was immediately forced to defend his position, allowing Jason to build up a margin of safety in third.

But after a couple of laps of steady gains on the two leaders things went into reverse and Jason lost several places over the next ten laps until his engine also gave up, forcing him into a spin that signified his race was over, and leaving the Italian Marco Ardigo to win for the second year in a row.

When they returned to the pits, data acquisition engineer Neil Berryman looked at the charts and the most likely conclusion was that the problem had been electronics related.

“I really did have a good chance there,” said Jason, “We all worked so hard on it as running at the front and being fastest really weren’t looking possible at the start of the weekend.”

The next race planned is the final round of the WSK International Series which will be near Zaragoza in Spain at the start of October, and although the championship is already decided Jason will be aiming for a repeat of his win in the championship earlier in the year in France.

Jason scored his first international victory at the weekend in the WSK (“Winning Series Karting”) International Series at Angerville in Central France. The wintry weather that also affected the UK struck just as his class were due to go out for the grand final.

A regular frontrunner on the national karting scene, Jason decided 18 months ago to concentrate on international racing, a tall order when the competition includes professional drivers from all over Europe. The WSK championship is the continent’s secondary tour and runs on the same circuits as the full European Championship, so Jason will be returning to Angerville in a month for a shot at an even more high-profile win.

Jason’s European Kart Championship ended in disappointment in France (Salbris International Circuit) at the weekend after his engine failed to start first time in both of the main races. The 19-year-old, who races for the Italian MGM Racing team, was second quickest in free practice but after an engine failure he needed to take part in timed qualifying on his second-best engine. This put him 18th, but Jason was able fight his way through to 8th in both heat races to start 10th on the final grid.

The European Kart Championship kicks off this weekend at Ugento, in the heel of Italy, and Jason has posted two 7th fastest times against 50 other competitors, many of whom are well-funded or professional drivers. After the first days free practice Jason is making his mark on the new KF1 class on only the second time he has raced with the radically revised engine formula.

A limited budget means racing only in the European and World Championships is the best use of resources, and after leading the British Championship up until the closing stages of the last race in 2006 Jason feels he has gone as far as he can in the UK.

“We’re funding ourselves from the proceeds of Tim Parrott Motorsport, our team racing in the UK championships,” said Jason, whose father, multiple World Kart Champion Tim Parrott is in charge of the team. “We’ve had championship wins in the Rotax Max class over the last few years and we’ve built a reputation as one of the best teams in the category. We’re independent as well which means if drivers want to race with us they don’t have to change to a completely different kart.”

In Europe, Jason is racing under the auspices of the Italy-based MGM Racing team and has switched to the Birel kart while remaining with the Parilla engine. He travelled to Ugento two weeks ago to race in the Italian Championship and to gain experience and finished fourth against many of the same drivers that he will race against this weekend.

However, in kart racing tyres are always a huge part of the equation and regulations mean that Jason has had to change to Bridgestone tyres this weekend.

“It’s like a completely different kart with those tyres on,” said Jason.

Despite this he is more than happy with his performance and is confident he can move into the top five tomorrow (Saturday) as the timed qualifying and heats start. Sunday will see the two televised finals.
