Career History
Jason officially started racing in 1996, but had been driving for fun since age 4. He spent three years in Cadets, but freely admits to being an average racer as family business commitments meant he was unable to put in as much time as many of the others he was competing against.
Junior TKM
Next up was Junior TKM, when Jason entered the Super One National Championships for the first time. In the first year, he finished 25th, when at the time there were often more than 100 entrants, and he considered it a good learning year.
The year after that, Jason changed kart and engine tuner and won both the PFi Summer and Winter Championships. He improved to 16th in Super One and won club races at Kimbolton.
Junior Rotax, 2001
Jason really came into his own in Junior Rotax Max, where he won the Super One, came second in the Open Championship (the “O Plate”), and fifth in the Champions of the Future (now Stars of Tomorrow) series.
Junior ICA, 2002/2003
After this, the natural step was to move into JICA and compete in the British and European Championships in 2002. Jason won the Open Championship, came fourth in the British Junior Championship and was ninth in the Europeans as top privateer.
In 2003 he remained in JICA in the UK and ICA in Europe due to the different age rules. He won the Kartmasters Grand Prix at PF International, but didn’t reach the finals of the European Championship due to a crash.
Formula A, 2004-2006
In 2004 it was time to move up to seniors full time. Jason raced in Formula A in the UK but due to the crash in the previous year had to do another year of ICA in Europe in order to qualify to move up. At the end of the year, Jason was fifth in the British Kart Championship against much more experienced opposition.
In 2005 Jason finished fourth in the British Championship after leading for much of the season until a five-way battle for the championship at the final round. He won a trip to a Renault F1 test after leading the championship at the mid-point of the season, and was also selected to test a Formula Renault car during the winter. He also finished fourth in the second round of the European Championship.
After this performance, Jason was offered a factory drive at the Italian Maranello Kart team where he moved for 2006. Throughout the season in the British Championship he and arch-rival Mark Litchfield were separated by the smallest of margins, with Jason losing out at the last round after an engine failure.
KF1, 2007
With the introduction of a new engine formula, Jason is doing all of his racing in Europe, and after finishing seventh and eighth in the first two races at Ugento, Italy is currently fifth in the championship.
